Kurien Joseph is a former business executive, with decades of experience in management and teaching, in international business and communication, in the public and private sectors, in India and overseas.

Graduating in Architecture from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, he did his postgraduate studies in Mass Communication at the Xavier Institute of Communication Arts, Mumbai, and in Marketing Management at the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. In 1976 he was a member of the 3-man team that won the National Competition for Young Managers (All India Management Association)

He has lived and worked in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Sydney (Australia). In addition he has travelled on work to nearly 30 countries. During the period 1980-1983, while posted in Sydney, Australia, as Regional Manager of the Govt of India’s State Trading Corporation for Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, he participated in Indo-Australian Joint Trade Consultations. Formerly an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management, in 1996 he was on the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce delegation to the State of Arizona in the USA.

After nearly two decades of hands-on international business experience in the public sector (STC), he spent another four years in the corporate private sector, before starting his own independent consultancy services for Indian and foreign organizations. His clients vary from internationally renowned companies like Ernst and Young to governmental bodies, such as the Ministry of External Affairs (Govt of India), the British High Commission in India and the World Bank in Bangladesh. His consultancy focuses on oral and written communication and also trains people in these areas.

He has taught Ph. D. and MBA-level writing courses (Writing for Theses, Business Writing). He has edited several theses at Ph D and M Phil. levels. In the corporate area, he has trainedprofessionals from various disciplines to write for the workplace. He has been acclaimed for his ability to analyzethe requirements of various clients and to bring about visible improvement. Writing skills, unlike oral skills, cannot be mastered in a few classes if a strong foundation has not been set up at school level itself. He therefore starts with obtaining writing samples from prospective trainees. Painstakingly going through every page of every sample, he identifies every error and classifies all into a frequency table. He then discusses with the client – and the individual trainees - the most frequent 6-10 errors that are most important in the clients’ special area of work. He then focuses on these areas and customizes exercises that are directly relevant and also highly interesting. This method motivates trainees and the results are always visible, through the simple expedient of keeping objectives realistic in light of the trainees’ starting levels and the time available for training.

He has trained officers of diplomatic corps, corporate executives at all levels from Managing Director downwards, IT engineers, lawyers, teachers, other senior and junior professionals, MBA students, professional undergraduate students and call centre operators. He has conducted training programmes in India and the UK. He also runs his own original courses in Public Speaking.

He used to contribute a regular column to the fortnightly (later monthly) journal Export Import Trade Flash. For 10 years he also edited TECH MONITOR, a bi-monthly journal on Technology Transfer published by the UN agency, Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology, New Delhi. At one time he was also active in amateur theatre, as actor, director and writer.
